3D Retoucher

Job description

As our 3D Retoucher for Grip you provide feedback to all the photo-realistic content that is created in our in-house 3D studio within e-commerce/digital marketing. With your photoshop and retouch skills you know how to adjust lightning, shading and color to  make sure we can deliver the best quality of images to our clients. You understand what a technically and visually good image is. In addition, you will work on generalized setups for automated re-touch of Products. Interest and skills using compositing and more technical tools is welcome. Basic understanding of 3D is very helpful in this role in order to translate client needs to our internal team.

What’s Grip?

Grip supports brands to cope with the fast-accelerating challenge of the exponential grow and need for content. Grip is web-based software that automatically generates visual content. It’s based on photorealistic 3D, capitalising on INDG’s twenty-year-long experience in that field. 3D is good because once your beer or your juicer or your rocket is on Grip, it can be used and re-used for multiple media: images, videos, iOS apps, and such. Check out the website here.

This vision has worked quite well with clients: in less than two years, Grip won Coca-Cola, Nivea, Heineken, L'Oreal and others. As you can imagine, working with these companies requires knowing why, when and how they produce the thousands of visuals we've been trying to automate. Now, Grip is changing every day to accommodate the things we learn.

Job requirements

What you will do

  • Take images of new products and seamlessly integrate them into existing photographed scenes - meaning you will retouch products (bottles, cans) to make them look real alongside the models or objects in the photograph
  • Retouch/clean-up the photograph to allow space for the new product to fit in. This can include removing the old product as well as retouching the model's fingers/arms/hands to make the new product fit
  • Adjust the lighting, colour and size of the products
  • Add reflections and shadows from nearby objects in the scene onto the new products
  • Colour grading, matching sharpness/blurriness, matching noise levels
  • Recognize where the 3D renders are incorrect (perspective, angle, lighting etc) and provide feedback to fix them
  • Follow our standardised method of working on the photoshop files/layers so team members can easily work on the file too
  • Engage in two 15-to-30 minute meetings per week to synchronise with the rest of the team on the project

What you need

  • Excellent photoshop skills - including knowledge of all the blend modes, different selection types (pen tool, channel masking, luminosity and colour selections), how to realistically apply filters (blur gallery, sharpening, noise, etc), an understanding of smart objects and non-destructive workflows
  • Previous retouching experience, particularly in compositing
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Experience with colour grading and masking (creation and clean-up)
  • A good understanding of lighting; i.e. how an object should reflect both the lights and other nearby objects, how it should cast shadows, how light travels through liquid, how a glass bottle should distort the objects behind it, etc. And to be able to look at a photograph and understand where the lights are coming from, their size, colour and the type of shadow they will cast
  • A basic understanding of how cameras and lenses capture light and how they distort/warp the image, understanding of focal length, depth of field, chromatic aberration, sensor noise and bokeh
  • Preferably have experience working with 3D renders and an understanding of how CGI images are produced
  • Communication skills to discuss issues or potential improvements to the workflow
  • Ideally a fast internet connection to manage uploading/downloading large photoshop files
